Vietnamese Exemption Exam
INTRODUCTION
The Vietnamese Exemption Test is offered to students as an alternative means
for satisfying the Language Other Than English (Category
VI) and the International/Global Issues (Category
VIII) General Education requirements. You should take this test if you have a strong background
in Vietnamese and not interested in taking additional course work. This
test may be taken only once. No University credit is given. There is no
fee to take the test if you are a UCI student.
EXAM DESCRIPTION
The examination used for
Vietnamese was developed by a faculty from the Department of East Asian
Languages and Literatures at the University of California, Irvine. The exam
covers topics normally learned during the first 4 quarters of Vietnamese
at UCI. The Vietnamese Exemption Exam is a multiple-choice test lasting
one-hour and consisting of five sections:
Part I: Listening
Comprehension
Part II: Spelling
Part III: Vocabulary
Part IV: Grammar
Part V: Reading Comprehension
Examinees must pass all
5 parts of the test in order to satisfy the language requirement, so it is
important to work equally on all sections during the test. The
highest proficiency level attainable at UCI
by taking the Vietnamese exam is 2B.
PREPARING
FOR THE EXAM
The Vietnamese Exemption
Exam is designed for students who have a strong preparation in Vietnamese
(three or four years in secondary school or the equivalent). Since the test
closely matches the curriculum, the best preparation can be found in a first-year
Vietnamese textbook: CHAO BAN! An Introduction to Vietnamese (Textbook and
workbook) - By Tri C. Tran and Minh-Tam Tran, University Press of America,
Lanham, 2007. Students should also review the first five lessons in the second-year
textbook: Nguyen, B.T., Contemporary Vietnamese: An Intermediate Text, Northern Illinois University Press, DeKalb, IL, 1997. You may purchase either
book at the University Bookstore in the coursebook section.
REGISTRATION
The test will be
administered during the academic year only. Registration, required to take the
test, will be open during the second week of each quarter. You may register in
person with your UCI photo ID card at the Academic Testing Center, 3040 Anteater Instruction
and Research Building. At the time you register, you will be given information
on the date, time, and location of the test.
Notification
of Results
Results will not
be available by telephone. A paper copy of test results will be available during
Finals Week in the Academic Testing Center. Presentation of a UCI photo ID is
