Engineering Chemistry Refresher Course
The Henry Samueli School of Engineering provides a self-paced online summer chemistry refresher course to help prepare students for a college-level chemistry course. The online refresher course is also used for placement into Engineering 1A (General Chemistry for Engineers).
The online refresher course is offered through ALEKS. The course may be accessed through
Who must take the ALEKS Engineering Chemistry refresher course?
Aerospace Engineering majors
Chemical Engineering majors
Civil Engineering majors
Electrical Engineering majors
Environmental Engineering majors
Materials Science Engineering majors
Mechanical Engineering majors
You will need an assessment score of 85% before you can enroll. A score of 100% will earn you 5% (half a letter grade) toward your ENGR 1A grade.
NOTE: If you took the Chemistry AP test and scored 4 or 5 you already have earned credit for Chemistry 1A or Engineering 1A and do not need the ALEKS refresher. If you took the Chemistry AP test and scored 2 or 3, or if you took the Chemistry Subject Test and scored 550 or higher you may enroll in Engineering 1A. The ALEKS Engineering Chemistry refresher course is recommended for you but not required if you meet any of the foregoing conditions, but you will still need a 100% on the refresher assessment to earn the 5%.
Who is exempt from the ALEKS Engineering Chemistry refresher course?
- Biomedical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering: Premedical, majors must take Chemistry 1A. Please consult the information available about Chemistry 1A placement.
- Computer Engineering, and Computer Science Engineering majors do not need to take Chemistry 1A or Engineering 1A and do not need the Engineering Chemistry refresher.
When should the ALEKS Engineering Chemistry refresher course be taken?
Sign up for the ALEKS refresher course and complete the initial assessment as soon as possible.
